"Let the record be made of the men and things of to-day, lest they pass out of memory to-morrow and are lost. Then perpetuate them not upon wood or stone that crumble to dust, but upon paper, chronicled in picture and in words that endure forever." --Kirkland

James Garey
July 5, 1826 - Nov 27, 1916

James Garey was born July 5, 1826 in Queenstown, Ireland. On September 15, 1861, he enlisted as a Private in Company C of the 52nd Illinois Infantry at DeKalb, IL. He re-enlisted on December 25, 1863, as a Private at Pulaski, TN, with the same unit. By order from the war department for disbandment, he was discharged July 6, 1865, at Louisville, KY, as a Private. He received $4.00 per month on pension certificate number 560,172. On September 5, 1887, James was admitted to the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Quincy, IL, registered number 498 and he was discharged on June 2, 1895. His admission paperwork lists chronic rheumatism and crippling in left hand due to gunshot wound as his disabilities. He was 64 years of age, a resident of Morris, married, and listed his 2nd cousin, William Humble of Morris, as his nearest relative. James was 90 years old when he was re-admitted to the Home on May 20, 1916. He was registered this time under number 10891 because of old age and impaired eye sight and hearing. He was a resident of Morris, not married, and had no children living. St. Angela's Academy of Morris was to be notified in the event of his death while at the Home. He died while on furlough in Morris on November 27, 1916, as per a letter written by Sister M. Hildegarde of St. Angela's Academy to the Home on July 27, 1918. He is buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Morris.
